1930s Pair of Pirate Bookends crafted by the JB Hirsch Foundry Company. These are hard to find Art Deco “Sabers & Swords” Soldier or Pirate Figures that stand 7 3/4 “H and weigh approx. 3 pounds each. The pirate figurines are an interesting mix of bronzed metal with with crimson and green highlights and a celluloid plastic called Ivorine for the face and knee pieces. They are on a heavy black stone base that measures 5″ x 3 1/4”. The tip of both swords are missing.
Hirsch made these in the art deco era as a copy tribute to the ivory and bronze figures coming out of France. Constructed from spelter, or French bronze, a combination of zinc and various other metals. The surface is then painted with cold paint to simulate the appearance of bronze.
