The story is about the complex relationship between a brother and sister, Tom and Maggie Tulliver. The theme of the story is a struggle between passion (personified by Maggie) and duty (personified by her brother, Tom). Maggie lives for Tom's love and approval, but if she follows her heart and her passions, her brother rejects her.
